Holiday Safety | Theft From Vehicles

Theft from vehicles can happen at any moment, even if you have prepared for it. With the last minute shoppers flowing to the malls, vehicles are easy targets for break-ins. When stress takes over and you are in a rush, things can sometimes be forgotten. Do not make your valuables, and vehicles a target. These tips follow you from the store to your homes.

  1. Remove all Valuables. Never leave ANYTHING on display when you leave your vehicle, including loose change, cigarettes, lighters, sunglasses, cell phones, stereos, cameras, and clothing. If they can see it, they could steal it.
  2. Park Safely. When parking at home, always use your garage if you have one, and lock both your vehicle and your garage. If you do not have a garage, try to park in a well-lit, open area. When parking at work or your local mall, park in a well-lit open area as well.
  3. Do not draw attention to your parked vehicle. Regularly dropping off purchases into the trunk, only to go back inside can tag you as a target. Complete all of your shopping at once, and promptly leave that location.
  4. Do not leave garage door openers in your vehicle! As convenient as this may be, thieves often target vehicles specifically for that purpose. With your door opener, they have access to your garage, and possibly your home if you have a shared door inside
  5. Remove Portable Accessories. Removing stereo face plates and locking them in the trunk or taking them with you, will deter thieves.
  6. Get an Alarm. Alarms can deter thieves not only from stealing items from your vehicle but also from stealing the vehicle itself. Even if you have an alarm installed NEVER, NEVER, NEVER leave anything in your vehicle. Thieves can smash a window, reach in grab an item and be gone in seconds, sometimes before your alarm is even activated.
  7. Make sure you have the proper insurance in place to protect you in the event of a theft situation. Nothing is worse than having to make a claim, and you come to find that you were not covered in the first place.

Good luck with all of your last minute shopping! Be safe, and do not put yourself in an unsafe position. Call for help if you feel uneasy and check out our other holiday shopping safety blog post here.
